This book is an enlightening and enjoyable narrative by the author of life while participating in the building of an Indonesian sailing Prahu he had hand crafted by the Bugis shipbuilders in Southern Sulawesi. Published in 1937 after living for eighteen months in the village of Bira and being part of one of the foremost shipbuilding communities in the Archipelago. The Australian National Maritime Museum has a great blog entitled Boats in Sulawesi: An Illustrated Journey that will provide insight to the authors experience. Written when the country was yet largely a sailing dependent community for transportation and commerce, one has insight to Indonesian life in the not that distant past.
