A wealth of information of maritime history for curious travelers. A great pre-travel exploration.
This small but information packed book began as a history course manuscript by the author while at the History Department at Tufts University “and intended to provide a historical background for a unit on maritime Southeast Asia” studies. The book version published in 1996, a diversion of much of her other work, but was due to her “conviction that a general knowledge of the early history of maritime Southeast Asia should be common knowledge among those who study and teach world history.” While a factual presentation of history, it is a fascinating account, focused primarily on what is now Indonesia, of where and how the Southeast Asia maritime sailing network proceeded for a millennium prior to the intrusion of European hegemony.
