More than a Family Vacation

Teagan and family at the lady diana waterfallDion Luas/SeaTrek Sailing Adventures

By Teagan Setzer

When I first learned I would be spending nine days aboard a wooden boat in Indonesia, I thought it would be another enjoyable family vacation. I had no idea I was about to experience one of the most unforgettable adventures of my life. Between jumping off the boat, incredible snorkeling trips, and scenic treks across different islands, the journey exceeded anything I had ever imagined.

Before the trip, I pictured Indonesia as endless white sand beaches and vibrant blue water. While those images certainly exist, they only begin to describe what it is truly like. Throughout the journey, we had the opportunity to snorkel in a wide variety of environments, from bright white sand beaches to striking black sand shores and even pink sand beaches. Each location felt completely unique, and every time we entered the water, we discovered something new. Vibrant coral reefs stretched across the ocean floor, filled with an incredible diversity of marine life that made each snorkel feel like a completely different experience.

From the moment we stepped aboard, I realized this would be no ordinary family vacation. Our home for the next nine days was a beautifully crafted traditional wooden sailing boat, where each morning brought a new island, a new activity, and a new memory waiting to be made.

Warm Smiles that Changed My Perspective

The adventure extended far beyond nature. One of the most meaningful parts of the journey was meeting the people who call these islands home. Visiting local villages allowed us to experience a culture that felt both welcoming and deeply rooted in tradition.

We were greeted everywhere with warm smiles, kindness, and a level of generosity that made each visit unforgettable. These interactions made the experience feel even more meaningful, as we were not just passing through these places, but briefly becoming part of them. Meeting these communities and observing their way of life completely changed my perspective.

Seeing how content and joyful people can be with so little made me appreciate the importance of simplicity, gratitude, and human connection. Their way of life was not defined by material things, but by relationships, tradition, and a strong sense of community. Learning about their daily routines and cultural traditions was truly inspiring and left a lasting impression on me.

Where Strangers Become Friends

Life aboard the boat also became its own unique community. At first, everyone came from different backgrounds and different parts of the world, but it did not take long before strangers became friends. Whether we were sharing meals on deck, watching sunsets together, laughing after long hikes, or exchanging stories under a sky filled with stars, there was a sense of connection that is difficult to find in everyday life.

The crew played a huge role in creating that sense of connection. They were always willing to help with anything we needed and made sure every part of the journey ran smoothly. Our tour leaders, Tinae and Dion, made a special effort to get to know everyone personally, which made the entire experience feel more welcoming and engaging. Their energy, knowledge, and kindness helped turn each day into something even more enjoyable and meaningful.

Encounter Komodo Dragons and Whale Sharks

Personally, some of my favorite moments were seeing animals that are rare or nearly impossible to encounter in most other places. It was incredible to observe Komodo dragons in their natural habitat, known for their strength and danger, calmly sunbathing without showing any sign of disturbance from our presence. Seeing such powerful creatures in such a peaceful state was unforgettable and unlike anything I had ever experienced before.

However, the whale sharks were my absolute favorite. It was surreal to see such massive creatures moving so gracefully and peacefully through the water. Despite their size, they were incredibly gentle. Swimming with whale sharks in their natural environment felt almost unreal. They truly live up to the idea of “gentle giants,” and that moment stayed with me long after we left the water.

During our snorkeling trips, we also encountered an incredible variety of marine life. From the big things like manta rays, blacktip sharks, and hawksbill sea turtles to the smallest such as the nudibranch, the ribbon eels, and the anemone. Each encounter felt completely different from the last, and together they highlighted just how rich and diverse Indonesia’s marine ecosystems truly are.

More Than Just a Vacation

Looking back, this journey was far more than just a family vacation. It was an experience filled with adventure, culture, connection, and discovery. SeaTrek allowed me to see Indonesia in a way that felt personal and unforgettable, and it is a trip I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
